Feds Stealing DNA?
For decades U.S. State governments have been secretly collecting the DNA of newborn babies without the parent's permission.
Babies born in US hospitals in the last 30 years have had their DNA sampled by State health authorities - usually without the parent's permission or knowledge.
The purpose of the sampling is supposedly to screen for genetic diseases, however, the DNA is also made available to other parties and in some states the DNA is stored indefinitely. In some cases the DNA is sold to researchers with the baby's name.
Screening for genetic problems is not always done nor were parents always notified if there was a problem. Insurance companies are provided with the information, making it easier for an insurance company to deny coverage due to a 'pre-existing condition'.
The tests are expensive and storing the DNA indefinitely is also expensive. With a health-care system that is chronically under-funded why would the government be willing to spend the money to secretly collect and analyze the DNA for every baby born in the US and then keep storing the DNA?
