Israel’s pullout from the Gaza Strip has been promoted as a peace making move and a disengagement with the Palestinians. While the world has been sold this story and the images that go with it another agenda is still at work. The facts suggest that the pullout is for another reason.
Pulling out of the Gaza Strip is certainly the right thing for Israel to do. But, at the same time that Israel is pulling out of the Gaza it has has been building settlements in other areas prohibited by peace agreements, has oppressed Palestinians and continued to murder and torture them. During the week of the pullout Israeli crimes continued against the Palestinians unabated.
If Israel really wants peace with the Palestinians why not simply stop oppressing them and start treating them as human beings?
In 2000 The U.N. Human Rights Commission said it was “gravely concerned” about several different types of atrocities inflicted by Israel upon the Palestinian People, which it denominated “war crimes, flagrant violations of international humanitarian law and crimes against humanity.” Little has changed since the report was issued.
The World Bank has estimated that 84.6% of Palestinian Gazan families and 57.7% of West Bank families live below the international recognised poverty line at 2 dollars per day. At the same time that Palestinians live in abject poverty Israelis live in relative luxury on land stolen from Palestinians. Israel ranks only 38th by gross domestic product per capita but the wealth is concentrated into jewish hands.
A report by Amnesty International says that in 2004 Israeli forces killed some 700 Palestinians – including 150 children – mostly in unlawful circumstances. The report lists “reckless shooting, shelling and air strikes in civilian areas… and excessive use of force”. “Certain abuses committed by the Israeli army constituted crimes against humanity and war crimes,” Amnesty’s report says.
Palestinians have certainly been guilty of crimes as well. At the same time that some Palestinians have engaged in violence, others have pursued all other options without success. Since Israel has not been willing to recognize the rulings of international bodies, Palestinian efforts at justice through non-violent means have been mostly in vain.
Israel is building a wall around the stolen land it intends to keep and in the process displacing the native inhabitants and preventing them from having access to their farm land. In July 2004, the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, ruled 14-1 that the construction of the wall being built by Israel on occupied land in and around East Jerusalem is illegal and the barrier should be dismantled. Yet, the wall continues to be built in defiance of the World Court and in the process Palestinian land is stolen and their homes and farms destroyed.
“The wall is a land grab and a political wall which, in its current path, cannot be considered a vital security need,” – Shabtai Gold, spokesperson for Physicians for Human Rights
“The crux of the issue is where the barrier goes… In this case, well into the West Bank. Inevitably Palestinian land will be on one side of the barrier and the people on the other. That is the problem.” – David Shearer, head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
Israel is not a signatory of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty nor does it recognize the authority of the United Nations or the World Court. It uses the international community to its own advantage but does not abide by the same rules imposed on other nations. Its policy of political assassination & torture is illegal and immoral yet tolerated because Israel is also feared. The Mossad is one of the most effective intellegence forces on Earth and is quick to silence its enemies.
Israel has profited mightily from its continued war on Palestinians. Just as it used the holocaust to gain a special status and hundreds of billions in aid, it has used Palestinian resistance and retaliation to further fill its aid gravy bowl and commit crimes it could never have gotten away with otherwise. Israel required an enemy to justify its secret nuclear program, its purchase and manufacture of advanced weapons and the purchase of stealth nuclear submarines it has armed with nuclear missles. While much of the world was feeling sorry for Israel and looking the other way as it committed its war crimes, it has been quietly using the money given it to make become an extremely dangerous rogue military power. Now that Israel has emerged as a super-power it no longer needs the conflict with the Palestinians as much and is prepared for a greater conflict.
Israel’s actions are consistent with the basic character of jewish culture, which is not likely to change overnight. Given countless opportunities and the continual urging of the international community over the last 50 years, Israel has continually failed to take even the most basic steps to foster a climate of peace. The simple fact is that Israel does not want peace and its actions prove it.
It is not logical to assume that the pullout from the Gaza Strip is anything less than a self-serving strategic move in preparation for a greater conflict. The Gaza Strip is strategically less important to Israel and the hardest of its occupied territories to defend. It is pulling out because it will need to defend other more important territories.
If the United States attacks Iran it will start a much wider conflict. Muslims have drawn the line in the sand at Iran and if Iran is attacked Muslims everywhere may retaliate. Israel will certainly be a target because much of the world realizes that Israel is the tail that wags the American dog and many other countries. If Israel is preparing for a war it is likely that it will get the US to start one for it.
The next question is – when will the US attack Iran? Bill Phillips
