Nuclear Reactors Leaking Radioactive WaterIt has recently been revealed that existing nuclear power plants are leaking radioactive tritium into the ground and contaminating ground water.
Criminal corporations like Bechtel and GE make billions building nuclear power plants, operating them, decommissioning them and then cleaning up the environmental contamination. They and their league of disinformation puppets make the claim that nuclear power is clean and cheap. They are simply lying.
Nuclear power is the most expensive form of energy due to the fact that it is extremely hazardous. It is expensive to build the plants, expensive to operate them and when people get fed up paying the billions upon billions the plants are shut down and billions more are spent to shut them down and clean up the mess. There is simply no safe place to store the waste which remains deadly for tens of thousands of years. Much of the true cost of nuclear power is hidden in subsidies from the Department of Energy and in clean-up costs passed on to taxpayers.
It has recently been revealed that existing nuclear power plants are leaking radioactive tritium into the ground and contaminating ground water. In New York the tritium is working its way to the Hudson River. In Illinois the attorney general is filing a lawsuit against nuclear power plant operator Exelon for failing to reports the leaks. Tritium has also been found to be leaking in New Mexico.
Tritium is carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic. This means that it causes cancer, genetic mutations, birth defects and a host of other problems. While it normally passes out of they body relatively quickly, if the radionuclide unites with carbon in the human body, plants, or animals, it becomes organically bound (OBT) and can remain in the human body for years causing damage. One study found traces of tritium in the body 10 years after exposure.
Because nuclear power is so terribly expensive and dangerous, no new nuclear plants have been built in the US since the 70’s. With energy prices up and a government available to the highest bidder, nuclear power is trying to stage a comeback. Utilities are planning to apply for permission to build 11 new reactor projects, with a total of 17 reactors. Only massive public oppostition can keep them from being approved.
Please let your local utility company and energy regulatory agencies know that you oppose nuclear power and instead want clean and sustainable forms of energy such a wind, solar, hydro-electric (when appropriate), and bio-mass. If you live in an area with wind or abudant sunshine you should consider getting off the grid and producing your own power. Conserve energy by simply using less. If you plan to build a new house build one that is energy self-sufficient. Bill Phillips
