Pinochet A Favored Fascist to the End
A letter was recently published after the death of US sponsored fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet in which he claims that he was proud of his actions.
With the full support and assistance of the CIA, Pinochet rounded up, tortured and murdered thousands of people in a brutal program of stopping ‘socialism’ on behalf of his US taskmasters.
The letter was published on December 24th by the Pinochet Foundation, a group of die-hard fascist followers.
In the letter Pinochet said he wished he hadn’t had to stage the bloody 1973 coup that put him in power, but called the abuses under his long regime inevitable. His fate was public shunning and unimagined loneliness, he said in the 6 page letter he wrote in 2004.
Pinochet died on December 10 of heart failure at age 91, successfully avoiding Earthly justice for his crimes in this life. When he died, Pinochet was under indictments charging him with human rights abuses and tax evasion in connection with tens of millions in money looted from the Chilean people. However, he was never tried because too many people in high places were willing to protect him, and themselves.
According to the official report, 3,197 people were killed for political reasons in the 17 years after Pinochet overthrew elected Marxist President Salvador Allende on Sept. 11, 1973. Tens of thousands were illegally imprisoned, tortured and forced into exile after the coup against democratically elected President Salvador Allende. The bodies of over 1,000 have yet to be found.
The fact that someone like Pinochet could so easily come to power and never be brought to justice tells us much about how the world really works.
For over 100 years the United States has suppressed democracy throughout Latin America and in much of the rest of the world under the guise of “fighting communism”, “promoting democracy” or “protecting American interests”. It has toppled democratically elected governments and replaced them with vicious dictators who have engaged in such horrific acts of terror that can only be described as pure evil.
In most cases the atrocities are carried out under direct orders of the US government. The death squads in Central America which tortured and murdered hundreds of thousands of people were under the direct command of the CIA, just as the death squads in Iraq today operate under the control of the US government.
In each country where democracy was destroyed the people who were first targeted for elimination were the natural leaders – teachers, union organizers, social workers and honest politicians. In many cases the list of people to torture and kill was prepared in advance by the CIA.
In 1958 the CIA hired Saddam Hussein to assassinate the President of Iraq – Abdel Karim Qassim. It wasn’t until 1963 that Hussein and the US were successful in overthrowing the Iraqi government. In the process 5,000 were killed. Immediately after the coup Saddam rounded up and murdered another 800 people on a list potential opponents specially prepared by the CIA.
It has only been in the last 10 years that America’s death-grip on Latin America has eased. The social, economic, cultural and political damage done to each country will take decades to overcome.
