Natural Gas Industry Destroying RockiesContaminated water, vanishing wild-life and dried up streams are the results of the unrestricted drilling for natural gas in the Rocky Mountains. In Colorado it is about to get even worse.
Federal land throughout the Rocky Mountains are becoming scenes of devastation from unrestricted drilling for natural gas. Once pristine areas are now devoid of wildlife, ground-water is contaminated and streams have dried up.
The Federal Burea of Land misManagement (BLM) no longer considers the welfare of the local human population, the land or the wild-life in its decisions on where to allow drilling. Just about anywhere can be bulldozed and drilled in the mad dash to punch as many holes in the Earth as possible.
Drilling was recently approved for one of Colorado’s last great wilderness areas, the Roan Plateau. During the meaningless public comment stage of the approval process there were seven comments for drilling and approximately 42,000 against. No one except gas executives want to destroy the Roan Plateau.
Rising from a base of multi-colored badlands 3,500 feet above the Colorado River valley, the dramatic Roan Cliffs give way to a broad and rolling plateau. Several streams drain the area and eventually drop into stunning box
canyons featuring one of the state’s tallest waterfalls.
The landscape even hides a few magical hanging garden seeps and extremely rare plants that occur nowhere else on earth.
The Roan Plateau is known as one of the most biologically diverse areas in western Colorado and is home to many fish, wildlife and rare plant species, including mule deer, elk, black bear and mountain lion. There are 17 rare vertebrate species, including the federally listed peregrine falcon and
bald eagle, as well as Colombian sharptail grouse, sage grouse, great basin spadefoot toads, northern
leopard frogs, and bats. It is also home to one of the world’s most genetically pure populations of the
imperiled Colorado River cutthroat trout. All of it will be severly affected by the seismic surveys, building of countless roads, clearing for drilling pads, drilling operations, pipelines, contamination of groundwater and diversion of streams for drilling water.
It is time to face the facts and accept that the federal government does not represent the people of the United States but has instead become an instrument of criminal corporatons whose only mission is profit at any price.
We the people have a moral and legal obligation to defend our land and the constitution against the feds and their corporate masters.
