In about 3 weeks, Israel killed more than 1,300 people and wounded thousands more. Israeli barbarity in Gaza has shocked and puzzled much of the world. How could any nation engage in such atrocities?
Israel has long committed unspeakable acts of violence against its neighbors but the recent attacks against Palestinians in Gaza go well beyond previous crimes and well beyond anything that could ever be justified.
Witnesses and evidence show that Israel did the following:
Specifically targeted civilians and especially children
Used illegal weapons, including white-phosphorous and depleted uranium
Tortured and executed children and parents in front of their family members
Targeted aid, medical and educational facilities and staff
Israel claimed that it had to invade in order to stop rocket attacks launched from Gaza. However, a report by Canadian intelligence officials prior to the Gaza attack calls the impact of Hamas rocket attacks on Israel “primarily psychological.” The rockets killed only 4 people from 2005 through 2007 and posed no significant threat to Israel. The rocket attacks could have been stopped by merely ending the oppression of Palestinians.
The real reason for Israel’s atrocities can be determined by their outcome and the Israeli Minister of Defense is a good source of information on the topic:
“If I were a Palestinian of the right age, I’d eventually join one of the terrorist organizations.” – Ehud Barak, Israel Defense Minister, quoted in Haaretz, 1998
If Israeli atrocities lead to resistance and reprisals then it is apparent that Israel’s actions are intended to create an enemy and continued warfare. By attacking Gaza the way it did, Israel is assured that millions of Palestinians and muslims from other countries will be willing to risk their lives to kill Israelis.
Since Palestinian’s lack a patron like the US to fund, arm and train a military like the one Israel has (the world’s 4th largest), Palestinans will continue to be limited to small arms and suicide attacks. They can’t win a conflict with Israel but they will keep up the resistance and retaliation as long as they can. As the courageous under-dogs they will continue to gain sympathy from others. Israel and the countries which support it will be viewed as the villans they are.
The next logical question is: Why does Israel want to be hated and create conflict?
The issue is complex and has many facets and will be addressed in part 2 of this article.
