There is a plethora of disinformation about fish oil being a requirement for good health and a result many people are needlessly taking fish oil capsules and eating fish. By doing so they poison their bodies and cause further damage to already devastated ocean eco-systems.
Fish oil contains dangerous heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium. It also contains toxic industrial pollutants, including PCBs, DDT, dioxin, flame-retardants, pesticides, and others. These toxins have contaminated every corner of the globe and are concentrated in fish oil and the fat of other sea creatures. Arctic dwelling Inuit, whose diets are high in fish, have very high concentrations of toxins. Studies have shown that Inuit women have the highest concentrations of toxins in their breast milk than any other women in the world.
Seafood is the leading cause of exposure to methylmercury, which causes neurological damage to a developing fetus and young children.
Some companies selling fish oil claim that their brand has had the toxins removed, however, it is not easy to remove the toxins nor is it easy to verify the validity of manufacturer’s claims. Pharmaceutical grade fish oil is still allowed to contain significant levels of dangerous toxins.
One of the leading toxins in fish is dioxin, an extremely dangerous chemical that has no safe exposure level. Even a few parts per trillion can cause serious health problems. Ocean fish and freshwater fish are known to contain high levels of dioxin worldwide. Fish oil has highly concentrated levels.
Sea creatures are also a primary source of food-borne illness. Fish start to decompose shortly after being killed and even when refrigerated the bacteria levels rise rapidly. Most fish reaches market many days or even weeks after being first caught.
The Natural Resources Defense Council estimates that about 70% of the world’s fish populations are now severely depleted. Many species have been pushed into extinction. It is not just fish that are being wiped out, commercial fishing operations also devastate turtles, dolphins, seals and other sea mammals.
In an effort to exploit the few remaining areas of ocean life, the bottom of the oceans are now being scraped clean and hauled to the surface in a horribly destructive practice called bottom trawling. Most of what is brought up is simply thrown back. 100% of what is thrown back is dead as no species can survive the sudden reduction in water pressure and damage caused by the nets. Entire eco-systems are being destroyed before they have ever been studied. Scientists have called for an international ban on bottom trawling.
The market in fish oil is a major cause of the destruction of the oceans. If you buy fish oil you are directly contributing to the needless destruction of the oceans as well as endangering your own health.
Fish oil contains omega-3 fat. The human body needs omega-3s for ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). All are required to help regulate blood pressure, support organs and maintain healthy brains and eyes. You can get omega-3s from chia, perilla, flax seeds, walnuts, purslane, lingonberries (cow berries), canola, seabuckthorn, soy and hemp.
For millenia, humans have led healthy, happy and long lives without consuming fish. You can too by simply eating a well-balanced diet of fresh grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables and nuts. A healthy plant-based diet will make you feel better and will help protect the Earth.
